Between the Alps and the Adriatic
A winegrowing paradise
The Vipava Valley is one of Slovenia's most recognised wine regions, and its wines are steadily securing their place on the international wine map as well. On its western edge lies Vrtojba, where the influences of the Vipava Valley, the Gorizia area and the nearby Adriatic come together. Warm, sunny days are complemented by cooler nights, while the characteristic Vipava bora helps regulate humidity and keep the grapes healthy. Such conditions allow the grapes to ripen gradually and contribute to the freshness, aromatic character and personality of the wines.
Winegrowing has a long tradition in Vrtojba and in the wider Vipava Valley. Alongside local and traditionally present varieties, many internationally widespread varieties also thrive here, expressing themselves in their own way in the particular climate and soils of the Vipava Valley.
Among the varieties closely tied to this winegrowing area, Malvasia holds a special place. In the sites here it develops its characteristic aromatic character, freshness and complexity, and beautifully expresses the particularities of the place where it ripens. Malvasia is thus more than just a grape variety – it is part of the winegrowing heritage and identity of this land.
In these vineyards, tradition, the knowledge of generations and a modern approach to winemaking come together. Each variety tells, in its own way, the story of the soil, the climate and the people who create the wines of the Vipava Valley.
Good wines are born in close contact with nature – and with the people who know it.
Soil and climate
Mediterranean influences from the south and continental influences from the surrounding mountains intertwine in the Vipava Valley, creating conditions favourable to the vine. The bora reduces humidity and helps keep the vineyards drier and healthier, while sunny days aid the ripening of the grapes.
In these conditions our wines are born – fresh, aromatic and full of the character of the valley they come from.
